Berlin: COLLAPSE: CLIMATE, CITIES and CULTURE

The COLLAPSE: CLIMATE, CITIES and CULTURE exhibition focuses on the design/artist community’s response to environmental urgency, using architectural models, design prototypes, drawings, and art to frame and advance this vitally important conversation. We will contrast and compare examples of design from central Europe to show efforts to find solutions for our current state of planetary peril. The practices and projects selected for this exhibition come from different disciplines and operate at multiple scales, in a range of forms—constructed works, materials and systems research, community development, and speculation. These diverse projects are joined by their shared focus on improving the health and well-being of our fragile planet and all of its occupants. Design will help to determine how we face our current and future collapse.
GROUPS: Chora, Raoul Bunschoten, Raumlabor, Marie-Luce Nadal, Terra Forma, Alexandra Arènes, Axelle Grégoire, Frédérique Aït-Touati, Terreform ONE, Mitchell Joachim, Peder Anker, and GDNYU.

Times Square Electronic Garden - Making it in Brooklyn

Times Square Electronic Garden
May 10th 2016
Global Design NYU, Gallatin, Tisch ITP, Terreform ONE, Sponsored by Time Square Alliance and NYCxDESIGN

The “Times Electronic Square Garden” project is meant to initiate a conversation about climate change, energy use and green urban spaces. Designed and fabricated by New York University students, this earth bomb features speakers and live sensors among the plants that connect to our URL. The idea is to “re-nature” Times Square so that the public can contemplate new natures within our cities. We invite people to explore soothing living vegetative surfaces and recognize the stark contrast of their hyper-electrified surroundings. The students have designed and built an open central sphere for visitors to circulate through so that they may encounter a microcosm of hanging gardens. Around the sphere there will be a greenscape of serpentine living benches for rest, gathering, and contemplation. The whole project, start-to-finish, will be erected and removed in a 24 hour period. It will be a place to reimagine Times Square’s consumer culture into a truly sumptuous environmental future.

SPOTLIGHT: KATE ORFF of SCAPE STUDIO | MISSISSIPPI WATERFRONT

SCAPE Studio is a New York City based architecture firm, established in 2004. SCAPE is skilled in research and design practices, conflating principles of ecological urbanism, strategic planning, landscape architecture and sustainability into a majority of their projects. They approach architecture with great comprehension, thinking about the many transformative elements of a space. They aim to" influence design, public education and policy through a range of outputs, including reports, books, pilot projects, parks, gardens, play spaces and installations."

Kate Orff is the founding principal of SCAPE Studio, a registered landscape architect and an Associate Professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. Her work has been featured in social publications such as the Economist, the New York Times, and New York Magazine, in addition to architecture periodicals such as Metropolis, Dwell, Azure and Landscape Architecture Magazine. Kate Orff "explores the cultural and physical complexity of urban landscapes and their unique textures, ecologies, programs and publics."

SCAPE's newest project involves the redesign of the Mississippi waterfront parks. The Mississippi River flows through three distinct divisions: upper, middle and lower Mississippi. This structure will be built in the upper, middle division, alongside downtown Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota Campus. With this project, The Minneapolis Parks Foundation is "aiming to redefine the city’s relationship with the riverfront over the next 20 years, starting with building an immersive waterfront park in the heart of the city, about a mile upriver from campus."

Orff hopes to generate a unique, interactive and aesthetic nexus between the park's green space the Mississippi River border. This design protocol fits into SCAPE's approach to ecological urbanism and should translate to a brilliant end result.
